Frequently Asked Questions
WHAT IS ENLIGHTEN™?
Introduced in 2014, Enlighten is a very advanced laser system for the effective and safe removal of tattoos and benign pigmented lesions.
HOW DOES ENLIGHTEN LASER TATTOO REMOVAL DIFFER FROM OTHER LASER TATTOO REMOVAL OPTIONS?
The Enlighten laser offers a precisely adjustable laser energy level, pulse duration, wavelength, and spot-size for depth, speed, power, and safety. It also features extremely short and high- power picosecond laser pulses that efficiently and quickly break down the ink particles in tattoos. A 'picosecond' is one-trillionth of a second, and is 1,000 times shorter than the 'nanosecond' pulses used in existing lasers for tattoo removal. Picosecond laser pulses have been shown to remove tattoos more completely and in fewer treatment sessions than other types of tattoo removal lasers devices. The verdict? SAFER, BETTER CLEARANCE, and FEWER TREATMENTS.
HOW MANY TREATMENT SESSIONS ARE REQUIRED?
This is the most common question and is also the hardest one to answer as all of these listed variables impact the tattoo removal process: • Age of tattoo Size of tattoo • Location of tattoo • Professional or amateur tattoo • Tattoo ink colors used • Depth of ink • Density of ink • Pre-existing scarring within tattoo • Patient's underlying health and immune system • Patient's skin color In general, you should anticipate at least 6 treatment sessions for black and gray tattoos and are 40-50% faster to clear or fade than colored tattoos.
WHY ARE MULTIPLE SESSIONS REQUIRED?
Tattoo ink is deposited deep in the skin. In order to reach all of the ink in the skin multiple treatment sessions are needed for clearance. Depth, size and color of the tattoo also impact the number of treatments needed.
WILL THE TATTOO COMPLETELY DISAPPEAR?
In many cases, yes, the tattoo can completely disappear with the Enlighten. However, it is very important to know that some ink colors are more difficult to clear than others.
IS THE PROCEDURE PAINFUL?
Patients compare the procedure to a rubber band being snapped against their skin. Topical or local anesthetics are available to minimize discomfort. In addition we offer the Pro-Nox system for a small additional fee. This system delivers 50/50 mix of Oxygen and Nitrous Oxide (also known as "laughing gas") through a self-administered disposable mouthpiece and hose and has been used to ease pain and anxiety for decades. It takes effect in seconds and clears from the body within minutes, so you won't need a designated driver if used and is completely non-addictive.
ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS FOLLOWING THE TREATMENT?
Most patients experience redness and swelling immediately following the treatment. These side effects are temporary and typically subside within a day or two following treatment. Blisters may also appear within 24 hours of treatment and also resolve within a matter of a few days. Hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation are also possible side effects. They can occur when the body's production of melanin is skewed after a laser treatment. With hyperpigmentation, the body overproduces melanin in reaction to the laser treatment, so skin in the treated area is darker than the natural skin tone. With hypopigmentation, the melanin is depleted by the laser treatment and the skin appears lighter. Both hypopigmentation and hyperpigmentation are typically temporary and resolve naturally with time. At Trilogy Health, Dr. Levine considers patient’s safety paramount and treats darker skin tones conservatively, using only the appropriate wavelengths and laser energy levels.
IS THERE ANY DOWNTIME ASSOCIATED WITH THE TREATMENT?
Patients can return to regular activities immediately following the treatment. However those with middle to darker skin tones are at the greatest risk for pigmentation changes and minimizing sun exposure following each treatment is recommended.
WHAT KIND OF TATTOOS CAN BE REMOVED?
1. PROFESSIONAL TATTOOS: Done by a professional tattoo artist using high quality ink pigments that are known to withstand the test of time. 2. AMATEUR TATTOOS: Usually done at home or in prison. The typical Stick-N-Poke, composed of substances such as charcoal, pen ink, soot, or whatever pigment available. This homemade pigment is then administered using makeshift tattoo machines or simply a hand-held needle. 3. COSMETIC TATTOOS: Semi-permanent tattoos placed on eyebrows (including microblading), lips and around the areola for breast reconstruction. 4. SCALP MICROPIGMENTATION: A highly technical, methodical tattoo procedure specifically designed to create the illusion of hair. It requires top quality inks, dedicated facilities and experienced specialists to create the intended hair design. There is no room for error when it comes to this service. The main purpose of the procedure is to be undiscoverable. However; like any procedure, the effects of a bad scalp micropigmentation can be disastrous. Incorrect pigment, incorrect depth, or with incorrect spacing, what should have been a natural-looking way to mask hair loss quickly becomes a beacon for unwanted attention. 5. TRAUMATIC TATTOOS: “Road Rash” results when pigment is deposited in the skin by abrasion, as seen in bike, car or motorcycle accident or by explosive forces. The asphalt materials become lodged in the dermis after re-epithelialization of the wound and result in blue or black tattoos, depending on their depth. 6. MEDICAL TATTOOS: Created for medicine purpose such as those used in radiation therapy. 7. ARGYRIA (Localized): Discoloration of the skin due to piercing silver jewelry as adornments. Common areas are nasal, earlobe, tongue; with nipple, navel, and genital not far behind in popularity.
HOW DOES TATTOO REMOVAL WORK?
Laser energy breaks down the tattoo ink pigments deep underneath the skin, then the body’s immune system absorbs and slowly flush out all the broken pigments through the waste system over the course of 2 months. The idea is quite simple; laser breaks it down; immune system flushes it out. Rinse and repeat the entire process every 8-10 weeks until mission accomplished, be it lighten up the unwanted tattoo or completely remove the tattoo.
